It Could Be Said That Benjamin Franklin Was Truly The Enlightened Amer
It could be said that Benjamin Franklin was truly the enlightened American of his time. He was a pioneer in the study of electricity and is world-renowned for his ideas and inventions. Today, after two hundred years, his name is still remembered by millions, and his influence is still felt world-wide. A man as great as this deserves some sort of remembrance for all that he accomplished. Recently there has been talk of adding a fifth visage to Mount Rushmore, someone who is in keeping with the four great men currently displayed. Benjamin Franklin's achievements as an inventor, discoverer, and statesman well deserve him a place on this great monument. During his lifetime, Benjamin Franklin gave us a multitude of inventions, many of which are still used in some form today. "Necessity is the mother of invention," said Franklin. In fact, it was necessity which prompted a very well known invention. Franklin was unfortunate enough to be both near- and far-sighted. Frustrated by having to constantly change between two pairs of glasses, he created bifocals where he cut the lenses from both spectacles in half and put them together in one frame. Another invention of his still in use today is the odometer. Although modified somewhat for use today, Franklin used the device on his carriage to map out routes in the town. Basically, his odometer measured how many times the wheel of his carriage made a full circle. Franklin's other inventions were many and far ranging including such devices as the catheter to the Franklin stove to the lightening rod. Along with his may inventions, Benjamin Franklin is well remembered for many of his ideas and discoveries. Foremost on this list is probably electricity. Before his lifetime, scientists in Europe dabbled with various tests and assessments of such things as friction, attraction, and repulsion, but it was only mere dabbling until Benjamin Franklin. Franklin saw that lightening and electricity are essentially the same force, and he realized the awesome power both contained. Most have heard about Franklin's experiments with Decker Page 2 lightening through the story of the kite and the key in the lightening storm, but few people realized that he had many other great ideas still in used today. Franklin came up with daylight savings time so there would be more hours of light during the summer so more productive work could be done. He started the first fire department and sixteen years later began the first fire insurance company. He was the first to chart the Gulf Stream, he is credited with the first political cartoon called "Join or Die," he was the first to advocate Vitamin C, and much more! Franklin was also a well-known statesman. He proposed a truly visionary plan at a meeting of representatives in Albany, NY called the Albany Plan of Union. This plan proposed to unify the colonial governments and form an alliance with the Iroquois Indians, one of the few tribes not allied with the ever-attacking French. The plan also gave the government authority over defense, westward expansion, and Indian relations. The plan went unheeded, but became a reminder of the enormous potential of a unified government. Franklin sought a resolution to the Native American problem peacefully but to no avail. He later advised the British military commanded by General Braddock in their attempts to cease Native American attacks in the colonies. When the military regiments failed because General Braddock didn't head Franklin's warnings that the Indians would resort to guerrilla warfare, Franklin, with the help of his son William, was put in command of the defense of the north western frontier. His command, however, would be short-lived. He would soon be called away to London as a representative of Pennsylvania. Whether he was being an inventor, a thinker, or a statesman, Benjamin Franklin was a leader among men. "There never was a good war nor a bad peace," he once said. Franklin was a visionary, and he deserves to be honored with his face carved into the stone of the legendary Mount Rushmore.

Food Insecurity Essays
Food Insecurity Essays Food Insecurity Essay Food Insecurity Essay Food Insecurity Currently millions of people are suffering from the problem of hunger and under nutrition around the world. The main cause of the problem is food insecurity. Food insecurity is the condition where a group of people lacks a sustainable source or access to enough, hygienically safe and nutritious food that can sustain a healthy, good and productive life. Food insecurity can be termed as seasonal, temporary or chronic, depending on how serious it might be. It may occur in different levels including the national, regional or household levels. Its opposite, food security, is defined as the situation where all the people have both economic and physical access to basic food at all times. This security is not guaranteed for about two million people in the world today. : Food insecurity arises mostly from several reasons. These reasons include climatic changes. Climatic changes are unavoidable though they are predictable. The climatic changes can be caused by several reasons, which include natural calamities like tsunamis or earthquakes. These causes, without a proper economic base to support one, might be very hard to come up from and quite unavoidable. Urban development is another reason that causes food insecurity. Urban development causes food insecurity by the depletion of important lands used for agriculture and by raising the standards of living. The raising of standards of living leads to an increase in the prices of necessary and basic foodstuffs. This in turn leads to the creation of a group of people who cannot manage the life. This group becomes insecure in terms of food and other basic wants (Babu Sanyal, 2009). Population growth is also another cause of food insecurity especially in developing countries. This is the issue since the budgets of most developing countries are not fit enough to be able to support the rising populations that are mostly encountered in them. Population growth works hand-in-hand with the growth of urban centers and these lead to marginalization of other areas leading to creation of slums and these marginalized groups experience food insecurity. Oil price shifts can be said to be the most significant cause of food insecurity. Oil is used in almost all if not all industries. This makes it a very important commodity in the production of all necessary items and especially foodstuffs. Therefore, being a raw material in all crucial industries, the fluctuation in its prices has to be reflected in all products. The rise in the oil prices therefore is reflected in the basic food products in the market. The major problem here is the recent increase in the oil prices that has made the situation even worse. Another problem is that the oil prices are not necessarily confined by borders, thus the effect is felt worldwide. Other causes of food insecurity, especially in underdeveloped countries include war, poverty, civil unrest and conflicts, poor national policies and corruption. These reasons do not promote the equitable and fair distribution and access of food for all. Others include barriers to trade, environmental degradation, poor agricultural development, low educational levels, gender inequality, poor health and cultural insensitivity (Babu Sanyal, 2009). The United Nations has given an estimate of about 840 million people worldwide who are faced with food insecurity. Majority of this number resides in developing countries and most of these countries are in the continents of Africa and Asia. To solve the problem, governments should ensure that food is not only available but also accessible to all. The governments should also ensure that food prices are subsidized in order to cater for the poor and that food is equally distributed in all parts of their countries. Food should also be properly utilized. This means that food should be stored properly for it to be guarded against spoilage, proper handling to guard against diseases and proper preparation to ensure proper nutrition and balanced diets. The balanced meals include a variety of safe and quality foods the proper nourishment. It also includes the proper appropriation of different food groups. With these policies and recommendations followed, the problem of food insecurity shall be solved in time. References Babu, S.C. Sanyal, P. (2009). Engineering Ethics Henrys Daughters Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Engineering Ethics Henrys Daughters - Essay Example This also forms part of the engineering ethics. This paper will seek to explore the meaning of proprietary information and issue an example which it will elaborate. It will also explore and thereby give reason as to whether it was appropriate for Henry and his daughters to work on the same project for different parties. It will then elaborate whether there are ethical limits to what the sisters can share with each other about their work. Finally, it will seek to answer whether Senator Bob should have rescued himself from the investigative committee and whatever else he could have done differently as a member of the committee. Proprietary information is sensitive information which a corporation possesses and often uses it to gain advantage in the competitive market. It entails highly classified information which it limits accessibility from its contents. Proprietary information can as well be called trade secret. Property information is vital for the success of most business entities, especially in the current competitive worldwide markets where many business administrators identify that the intellectual resources of business are vastly sought- after items. Policies of business entities may prohibit their managers, workers and agents from revealing or exercising classified or proprietary information beyond the precincts of the business entity or for individual benefit, during or after service, without the appropriate written business approval to do so. Generally, a business entity has to categorize information as proprietary for it to be regarded as classified. Business Law Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1
Business Law - Assignment Example From section 21 of the ACL, it is evident that this law is aimed at leveling the bargaining power difference between the buyer and seller. Accordingly, Section 22 of the law deals with commercial transactions in protecting consumers from unconscionable conduct. According to section 18, misleading or deceptive conduct is prohibited, where the section sets out the elements that must be settled if contravention is to be proved. These elements are the conduct by the corporation or person, the activity of trade or commerce and conduct that misleads, deceives, or purports to mislead or deceive. This section is not only restricted to consumers, since it can be enforced by suppliers and competitors against other suppliers and competitors. A contract between two is generally dictated by two important factors, the offer of a contract and the subsequent acceptance of the contract by the other party. These two factors are important in contract law since they determine the time, place and contents o the agreement that make up the contract. An offer is determined by several factors, including the intention to be bound by a contract, a promise to adhere by the contract and communication of the offer to the other party. An offer must be distinguished from an invitation to treat, which is just an offer to consider the offer and cannot create a valid agreement. The distinction between an offer and an invitation to treat is done to set the intention of the offerer and offeree. The offer must also be communicated to the other party, in which case, the other party chooses to accept or decline the contract. The offeree to the contract has the option of accepting or declining the offer, and for an agreement to be reached, the offer ee must indicate intention to accept the contract. For an acceptance to be in line with the law, the acceptance must strictly adhere to the original offer, and of the offeree includes some new conditions, and then it

Truth and Lies Essay Example for Free
Truth and Lies Essay There are different types of lies. Distorted views and fabricated truths are two of them. Misunderstanding, on the other hand, is not a lie. Misunderstanding is a when we fail to understand something correctly and accurately. This happens a lot in our daily lives. A lot of conflicts and hard feelings are caused by this mistake. In order to avoid it, we should be more careful about the way we express our opinions and feelings. Simultaneously, we should listen to what people say and understand what they mean carefully. Sometimes, we misunderstand a fact. We can correct by asking others about that or study about it. C. G. Lichtenberg once said: ââ¬Å"The most dangerous of all falsehoods is a slightly distorted truthâ⬠. When we see the reality through distorted eyes, it can have an extreme effect on our emotions, thoughts and our interactions with other people. Imagine you want to drive to school today. Surprisingly, you see the green lights red and the red lights green. Needless to say, you stop at green lights and pass the red lights. You will be shouted at both times. You wonder why people are shouting at you without any reason, and after a while you get anxious and angry. You decide not to pay attention to traffic lights anymore. The reason is obvious: accident. This is what happens in our lives when have distorted views toward facts and reality. We had better change our views and try to solve this problem. Fabricated truths are the lies that are used to mislead people for centuries. These are so-called truths that are invented in order to deceive. We can see them in all aspects of life from religion to science and politics. Telling these lies is not limited to authorities, scientist or religious people in power. Ordinary people produce lies everyday to achieve what they want. We canââ¬â¢t fight these lies. All we can do is to research and seek the truth ourselves or at least donââ¬â¢t accept them easily and without proof. The truth is hard to find for different reasons. First of all, all people want others to have a positive picture of them in mind. They donââ¬â¢t want their lies to be revealed and they try hard to maintain that positive image of themselves. This is why people try to show that they are not responsible when something negative happens. So they lie about it. When something positive happens, people want to take credit for it. They lie again! This is also the case for different groups, organizations, religions, etc. who claim to have the ââ¬Å"truthâ⬠. They donââ¬â¢t have the complete truth. This is what gets people in trouble. These groups donââ¬â¢t want their followers to find out their weaknesses and stop their support. So they tell people a lot of lies and try to sustain them. In addition, lying is a part of human nature. Sometimes people say the same lie so often that they forget the real truth and start believing their own lies. Furthermore, people donââ¬â¢t want to hear the truth. We prefer a good story rather than the fact. We actually donââ¬â¢t like to deal with truth. We want to believe something, so we assume that itââ¬â¢s the truth. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: ââ¬Å"We are never deceived; we deceive ourselves. â⬠Another reason is that lies spread faster than truth, especially in the internet and other media. As Mark Twain said: ââ¬Å"A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. â⬠Sometimes, there is enough so-called evidence to support both sides of the conflict, the falsehood and the truth. So people are actually sitting on the fences when facing them. So the truth wonââ¬â¢t be revealed. Sometimes, the truth is out there, but we donââ¬â¢t seek for it and we expect others to provide it for us. These might be the reasons of most hidden truths. Whatever the reason is, people donââ¬â¢t want their lies and dishonest behavior to be revealed. When someone exposes the truth, their positive image is ruined. So they attack that person. People donââ¬â¢t try to disclose the truth when they are attacked. So some truths are not revealed because of this. Sometimes, the truths is easy to find, but hard to accept. We are lied to a lot and some of our beliefs are shaped according to those lies. When we find the truth, it seems like a vague idea that doesnââ¬â¢t fit the lies. So we canââ¬â¢t accept it and itââ¬â¢s like we have never found the truth. The complete truth is not told most of the time. Thomas Sowell said: ââ¬Å"There are only two ways of telling the complete truth: anonymously and posthumouslyâ⬠.

Common Man Tragedy in Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman Essay
The idea of dramatic tragedy is a classical one, discussed in Aristotle's Poetics. Before it can be established as to whether Miller really has written a tragedy or not, the very concept of tragedy must be investigated. Aristotle asserted, 'Tragedy is a representation, an imitation, of an action.1? He went on to outline the common features tragic drama must have. Tragedy has six elements, which, in order of importance, are: plot, character, thought, music, language, and spectacle. The plot requires peripeteia, anagnorisis, and cathartic effect. It must take place in one day, in one setting, with a unity of plot (i.e. all tragic, no comic subplot). The character must be ?good? (there is some debate as to the vague nature of this word), be 'true to type', be consistent in behaviour, be a great man (that is, to be representative of a whole society), and have one single tragic flaw. Thought is exactly that; the ideas that the speakers express in language. Music is also self-explanat ory. As for language and spectacle, the development of these is the perpetual instinct of drama to struggle closer and closer to real life. Willy Loman's character does adhere to the tragic hero guidelines to a certain extent. Rather than being a man who is a representative of a society, he represents society. His allegorical name of 'Loman' or 'Low-man' allowed Miller to twist the formula somewhat. He is true to type in that he dreams the American Dream, and subscribes to the desire for money and material possessions in capitalist society. Whether Willy is a 'good' man is debatable; his affair would indicate that he is not, his wife dotes on him, and Biff is crushed by the discovery of the mistress, so much so that he loses all faith in his fa... ...illy is a victim of the society in which he lives, or a victim of his own poor judgement. ?Willy is not simply a victim of that success-mongering culture. Miller wishes us to see that Willy accepts the success value all too easily and completely. The play suggests that, along with our pity for Willy, we take a critical attitude.8? Why Do We Need Management?
Why do we need Management? Melisa Honeycutt Vista College Why do we need Management? A business is an ongoing activity that will not run itself. As the manager, you will have to set goals, determine how to reach those goals and make all the necessary decisions. You will have to purchase or make your product, price it, advertise it and sell it. You will have to keep records, and determine costs. You will have to control inventory, make the right buying decisions and keep costs down. You will have to hire, train and motivate employees now or as you grow. ( Soni 2010) When a company has good management, the whole company does well. A good manager will be a great buffer for the owner and his employees. He/she will also coordinate most of the day-to-day business. Now we will look at what is the purpose of management, I find that there are five primary functions. * Staffing: You must be good at seeing raw talent and knowing when the company will need more employees. Planning: You need to be able to see the big as well as the small picture. * Organizing:You need great focus, most of the time you will need to be in many places and doing many jobs at once. It is a balancing act. * Leading: You will need to be a leader that can motivate people and get people to work together. * Controlling: You will need to monitor the business to make sure it stays on track. To me the world would look much like my home, if my husband and I left and put no one in charge. It would be complete and utter chaos; no one would know where things are and who did what. I see a manager as a babysitter of sorts and managing a business will be a lot like running my home and family. Does juggling ever come to mind when you think of running your own business? Creepy figure Essay
Miss Havisham seems a particularly creepy figure as she sits at a dressing table in an old, yellowed wedding gown. The room seems to be frozen in time, and Miss Havisham, dressed as a bride, looks more like a corpse. When Pip sees Miss Havisham, she is still wearing her wedding dress. ââ¬Å"She was dressed in rich materials ââ¬â satins, and lace, and silks ââ¬â all of white. Her shoes were white. And she had a long white vail, dependant from her hair, and she had bridal flowers in her hair, but her hair was white. â⬠Making Miss Havisham wear her wedding dress at first gives us the impression that she maybe is meant to be getting married that day. However we do soon find out that she has been in her dress for years. This shows us that Miss Havisham is depressed. Throughout the next 10 or so chapters, Pip leaves and moves to London with the money from an unknown source. Pip becomes a gentleman living with his friend. In Chapter 27, Joe Gargery comes to visit Pip in London. After Pip reads the letter from Joeââ¬â¢s new wife, he then says ââ¬Å"Let me confess exactly with what feelings I looked forward to Joes coming. Not with pleasureâ⬠¦ â⬠This sentence shows us that Pip had grown up and matured also. And even become a snob. Pip now looks down on Joe as he is common and not a gentleman like Pip. These few lines spoken by Pip start to make us feel a bit distant from him as he is now so different, itââ¬â¢s as if the reader doesnââ¬â¢t know this man. When Pip arrives, he greets Joe saying ââ¬Å"How are you Joe? â⬠to which Joe replies ââ¬Å"Pip, how air you Pip? â⬠Joeââ¬â¢s speech is a garbled attempt at sounding over-eloquent. It could read as if Joe is mimicking Pip, trying to say that he is posh, however, I think that all Joe is trying to do is act more upper class than he is infront of Pip so as not to embarrass him. However, he does. Joe then says ââ¬Å"Us two being alone now sir-â⬠as to which Pip interrupts. By calling Pip ââ¬Å"Sir,â⬠and he seems to use his hat to divert his nervous energy, and itââ¬â¢s constantly falling on the floor. This passage makes the reader feel uncomfortable for both Pip and Joe as the use of dramatic irony sets in. We know what both the characters are thinking and feeling, yet they do not. In Chapter 48, we read that Pip has to travel back to meet Miss Havisham. She has requested to meet with him. In chapter 49 Pip arrives at Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s house. On of the first few lines we read are after Miss Havisham say ââ¬Å"Thank youâ⬠to Pip and we read that Pip ââ¬Å"remarked a new expression on her face, as if she were afraid of me. â⬠This shows automatically that there has been a role reversal. Earlier Pip had been weak and timid and now it is as if Miss Havisham is the child. The cruelty of her actions seems to have finally hit her, and she breaks down, crying ââ¬Å"What have I done! â⬠and even falls to her knees before Pip and begs his forgiveness. Dickens uses Miss Havisham in this Chapter as if she had ââ¬Ëseen the lightââ¬â¢ and wants to repent her sins. At first in the book we donââ¬â¢t really like her, but now as she repents we grow fond of her and do indeed like her. Pip leaves the room, though returns a few minutes later on some odd presentiment. Just as he walks through the door, the old womanââ¬â¢s dress catches fire, and Pip wrestles her to the ground to smother the flames. Both of them are burned, Miss Havisham so badly that she is wrapped in gauze and laid out on the bridal table, in a sort of hideous echo of her normal white bridal gear. The doctor warns that there is danger of her going into nervous shock. To conclude. Charles Dickens, one of the great writers of his time, uses many different techniques in Great Expectations to manipulate the readerââ¬â¢s feelings towards a character, such as repetition, confusion, the use of colours and dramatic irony. He uses his techniques to make us feel sorry for the ââ¬Ëbadââ¬â¢ characters yet he controls this so that by the end we do Infact like them, which is why he is know worldwide for his work today.

Human and Animal Reaction Time Essays
Human and Animal Reaction Time Essays Human and Animal Reaction Time Paper Human and Animal Reaction Time Paper Observation Human reaction times vary person to person and often increase with age. This change in reaction time can have little impact on a persons daily life, such as when answering a ringing telephone. But this change can also have a dramatic impact when driving, working in dangerous environments, and negotiating busy streets and sidewalks. Literature Search Reaction time has been used as a psychological test since the mid-19th century (Dreary, 1). Several studies have been conducted dealing with reaction time and the factors that can affect it. In their study titled Validation of reaction time as a measure of cognitive function and quality of life in healthy subjects and patients, Jacobsen, Sorensen, et al studied and reported findings regarding diminished reaction times and the effect that poor health had on those times. Findings were conclusive that the healthier the individual, the better their responses. Hypothesis Individuals reaction time with their dominant hand is faster than those with their non-dominant hand. Conversely, there may be no statistically valid difference in the reaction time from one hand to the other. Experiment To test the variance in reaction time from dominant hand to non-dominant hand we set up an experiment using a simple reaction time test found in the ere marketplace on an Android telephone. This application required the user to touch one of four colored stars that match the color of an identified star in the upper right hand corner. The subject was asked to repeat this response 20 times and the total time was scored as the reaction time. If a subject made an incorrect touch then their time would continue until the correctly touched 20 stars. The subject would then be ask to repeat this test with their non-dominant hand. To standardize the testing instructions were provided by my team mates and t was decided that the subject would place the device on a flat surface in front of them and use the index finger on first their dominant hand and then their non-dominant hand. Data was collected for 30 random subjects and analysis performed. Data Analysis Data collected from the 30 random subjects was input and the following summary statistics were produced. Dominant Hand Mean Reaction Time (D) 18. 865 sec. I Median Reaction Time (D) I | 17. 264 sec. I Variance (D) I 1 128. 235 sec. I Standard Deviation (D) I 1 5. Cease. I Non-dominant Hand Mean Reaction Time (N) I 17. Cease. Median Reaction Time (N) I | 16. 412 sec. I Variance (N) I | 16. 130 sec. Standard Deviation (N) I I | 4. 016 sec. I The graphs below illustrate the mean for each hand as well as error with in plus or minus one standard deviation. Conclusion After conducting this experiment and reviewing the data, a few things became clear. One is that age of the subject had a significant impact on results with both hands. This is presumed to be the result of the interaction with a new technology. Younger subjects seemed to grasp the concept of what they were expected to do more quickly. Second, in this case, familiarity did not breed contempt, but it did breed faster reaction times. As subjects became more comfortable with the application they were using, their response times decreased. The later of these two factors had a more global effect on our outcomes, thus disproving our hypothesis in this case. I do not believe these results to be conclusive or authoritative and simply put, more research is needed. References Dreary, I. J. , Lied, D. ; Ionians, J. Discussion Questions (Business Ethics for Leaders class) Assignment
Discussion Questions (Business Ethics for Leaders class) - Assignment Example Leaders help to establish a culture of an organization and they set example others follow. Employees take their lead from their leaders and if leaders do not behave in ethical manner, employees might not as well. It is not what leaders say that matters, but what they do. Leaders should lead from the front and make sure not to isolate people who voice their moral concerns on business issues. Leaders in business must give life and meaning to these words by acting on them. This means to use every opportunity to stress importance of business ethics and key business decisions that are not only economically viable but make good ethical sense. To further ethical behavior there is a need to build an organization culture that values ethical behavior. The business must unambiguously coherent values that emphasize ethical behavior. One way of doing this is to draft a code of ethics which is a prescribed statement of ethical priorities a business adheres to. Few follow documents such as UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is grounded in right based theories of moral philosophy. Few incorporate ethical statements that express values or missions of employees. Charles Hills (2002) notes that multinational Unilever has code of ethics that includes following points ââ¬Å"Employees: Unilever is committed to diversity in working environment where there is mutual respect and trust and where everyone feels responsible for performance and reputation of companyâ⬠¦we are committed to safe and healthy working conditions to all employees... we will not use any form of forced, compulsory or child laborâ⬠¦we respect dignity of individual and their right to freedom of association.. It is evident that Unilever principles send a very clear message about appropriate ethics to leaders and employees. Few companies employ independent auditors to make sure that company is behaving consistent with its ethical codes. Finally, building an organization culture that places high
